Mozambique | Municipality relocates vendors and transport operators to safer temporary space

The Municipal Council of Matola-Rio has begun relocating vendors and transport operators to a temporary site where they will remain for approximately 90 days while construction works on the new transport terminal and new public market are underway. The measure follows an awareness campaign conducted by the municipality in coordination with the Municipal Police and Economic Activities services, aimed at removing operators from a high-risk zone and providing improved conditions for their activities. The Council Member for Sanitation, Cemeteries, Gardens, Parks, and Transport, Fismael, explained that the new location is transitional and will serve as a holding site until the completion of the new infrastructure.

According to the official, the relocation process will take place throughout the week, with field teams engaging transport operators to permanently vacate the former location and transition to the new facility. “The ultimate goal is to provide transport operators, vendors, and local residents with a more dignified and safe space to carry out their activities,” he stated. In turn, Cecília Aldeira Domingos explained that the move aims to ensure greater security for female vendors and other traders by removing them from an area deemed dangerous.

The official noted that the relocation effort is expected to extend over several days to ensure all vendors are properly accommodated at the temporary site. She added that upon completion of the new market and transport terminal, the municipality plans to integrate not only current vendors but also traders currently operating along the Mozal Highway (Estrada da Mozal). The future market will feature sectionally organized zones for selling greens, vegetables, and other goods, enhancing organization, bolstering safety, and offering better working conditions for merchants alongside greater convenience for consumers.
