Mozambique: Cuamba-Mecanhelas train service to resume soon after four-year halt

The restoration of the mixed passenger and freight train service is eagerly awaited by the local population, who believe the measure will significantly improve the mobility of people and the transport of goods, contributing to greater economic activity and the development of the districts concerned. During the suspension, communities faced numerous difficulties in travelling, at a time when the deteriorating roads linking Cuamba and Mecanhelas reduced transport alternatives.

For many residents, the train remains the safest, most affordable and most reliable means of transporting people and goods. The resumption was announced on Saturday by Niassa Provincial Director of Transport and Communications Marcelino Ferreira during a meeting with community leaders in Mecanhelas district, chaired by Provincial Governor Judite Massengele as part of the open government programme.
