A motorist in Cape Town has paid a fine after being caught on camera littering. According to law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason, the City became aware earlier this week of a video showing a motorist throwing litter from his vehicle while stationary at an intersection. In the footage, a person from another vehicle, later identified as a tour guide, is seen approaching the motorist, picking up the litter and tossing it back into the car.
The incident escalated when the motorist allegedly threw the litter out again and made obscene gestures towards the occupants of the tour bus. Following the video’s widespread circulation, the City appealed to the public for assistance in identifying both the motorist and the tour guide involved. Dyason confirmed that the motorist subsequently came forward of his own accord and paid the R500 admission of guilt fine in terms of the City’s Integrated Waste Management By-Law.
The City has thanked the motorist for doing the right thing and has again urged residents and visitors to refrain from littering or committing any other by-law transgressions. “These might seem like minor infractions, but the law is the law and applies to all, without fear or favour,” Dyason said.
