Construction on the Strand seawall has forced the temporary closure of Mosterd’s Bay over the peak holiday season. Mosterd’s Bay in Strand will be off limits this summer as the City of Cape Town pushes ahead with the next phase of its seawall upgrade. The closure affects the area between the Strand swimming pool and Norman Road.
Visitors won’t be stranded, though. The nearest safe swimming spot is near the Strand Surf Lifesaving Club, between the red and yellow flags when lifeguards are on duty. Those looking to fish or walk their dogs can head east of Norman Road, close to Greenways.
Deputy Mayor and Mayco member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, urged beachgoers to cooperate. “Neighbourhood watches and security will be on site to guide visitors to the nearest available beach to the east of Norman Road or west of Strand Pavilion throughout the upcoming holiday period. We ask locals and visitors to please adhere to this closure as this is for your own safety and security.

Only swim where and when lifeguards are on duty, between their red and yellow flags designating the safest bathing areas; beware of rip currents; please don’t swim under the influence of alcohol and always actively monitor children in and around the water,” she said. The City also urged beach users to keep an eye on public advisory signage, which may go up during the holiday period.
