Flames engulf homes in the Aalwyndal area of Mossel Bay during overnight firefighting operations, with crews battling intense heat and smoke. The Mossel Bay municipality has thanked residents and businesses for the outpouring of support during the fire emergency that affected Aalwyndal, Island View, Vakansieplaas and areas along the N2. In a statement on Wednesday, municipal officials said the compassion shown by the community had been “overwhelming and deeply inspiring”, with offers of accommodation for evacuees, assistance in linking displaced residents to safe shelter, and humanitarian support for firefighters and emergency personnel.
However, the municipality has urged the public to temporarily pause further donation drop-offs at the fire station in Schoeman Street. Officials said a structured and coordinated donation channel would be announced shortly to ensure that contributions are directed where they are most needed and can be used effectively. “The willingness of residents to step forward in times of crisis reflects the strength and unity of Mossel Bay,” the municipality said, while encouraging the public to remain calm and continue supporting one another as recovery efforts continue.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that the N2 has been fully reopened to traffic following overnight closures caused by heavy smoke and dangerous visibility conditions. The road was reopened at 5:16 am on Wednesday, after being closed from 11:20 pm on Tuesday, 6 January, between the Langeberg Mall off-ramp and Dana Bay in the direction of Cape Town. Traffic had been halted for several hours to ensure public safety while intensive firefighting operations were under way.
