Moshana will on March 5 host the annual International Women’s Day. The commemoration will be held under the theme: Give to Gain, Advancing, Justice, Equality and Empowerment for Women and Girls and Minister of Youth and Gender Affairs, Ms Lesego Chombo is expected to officially open the day. The objective of the event is to recognise and celebrate women and girls as agents of development.
As part of the build-up activities to the national commemoration day, Kanye District , hrough the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs, organised young women’s workshop in Moshana on March 3 to explore issues affecting young women. One of the speakers at the young women workshop, Coordinator of EnterprenHer, a DeBeers business programme, Ms Lydia Mafoko-Ditsa, said they aimed to train and educate young women and girls in pitching and presenting ideas to prepare them for local funding opportunities. Ms Mafoko-Ditsa encouraged women to also venture into male-dominated careers and also pursue opportunities and businesses that could not be easily overtaken by the latest technology.
Meanwhile, Principal Gender Officer from the Ministry of Youth and Gender Affairs, Mr Felix Mapeu highlighted that women also had rights, amongst them the right to make decisions at home, the right to leadership positions and the right to inheritance, which culturally and traditionally had been favoured for males. Mr Mapeu said women needed to be protected from gender-based violence. He encouraged them to report any form of violence inflicted on them by males.ENDS
