At the time the man, 39, was attempting to cross the road in Adams Mission, Ward 96, eMbumbulu.

The man was knocked to the ground before the front wheels of the tanker crushed him to death. Witnesses could be heard screaming in distress as the tanker sped off without stopping. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

The eThekwini Municipality confirmed that one person had died and extended its condolences to the bereaved family. “We have noted with deep sadness a fatal incident involving a municipal water tanker in Ward 96, eMbumbulu, this morning. One person lost their life in the incident.

We extends our condolences to the family, friends and community of the deceased,” the Municipality’s Marketing and Communications Directorate said in a statement. “The municipality is cooperating fully with the SAPS and has also initiated its own internal processes. As the matter is under investigation, we are not in a position to comment on the circumstances that led to the incident.” Officials have also been dispatched to support the deceased’s family. The municipality also appealed to the public to stop sharing the graphic footage.
