KwaZulu-Natal provincial police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has warned his members against colleagues who live opulent lifestyles. Mkhwanazi was debriefing the management and members of the KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (DPCI) in Durban on Monday morning. The session followed recent revelations concerning the Hawks at the Madlanga Commission and before Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing allegations of corruption, criminality and political interference within the criminal justice system.

Addressing members, Mkhwanazi acknowledged the impact of the allegations and controversies on morale within the unit. After all that has been said about the Hawks in KwaZulu-Natal, an upright DPCI member should be worried about their integrity. “The recent incident involving your provincial head and the breach of security protocol at the provincial headquarters added salt to a fresh wound,” said Mkhwanazi.

The KZN Hawks boss, Lesetja Senona, has been at the centre of a high-profile controversy. Senona testified before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is probing allegations of corruption, criminality and political interference within South Africa’s criminal justice system. During his testimony, he faced intense scrutiny over his alleged close contacts with well-known businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, an individual linked to organised crime, and WhatsApp messages between them that were presented as evidence.
