Elderly residents from Mkhambathini were showered with festive cheer at the official opening of the new Inkosi Thimuni Mkhize Hall on Thursday. Senior citizens aged 60 and over from every ward were brought together for the day’s festivities. The elderly residents were given blankets, and those struggling to walk received walking sticks to help improve their independence.
The programme started in Maqongqo on Wednesday and continued on Thursday in the Ngilanyoni area, where the handover coincided with the official opening of the hall. Construction of the hall began in March. “We want residents to protect this hall as their own,” Mayor Nhlakanipho Ntombela urged.
“Many of them are grandparents caring for children and relying solely on social grants, making it difficult for them to afford gifts during the festive season. This programme is about giving back to the community,” said Ntombela. “We want our elderly to feel appreciated, to interact with others and to enjoy themselves.

They are important to us. We also opened a platform for them to speak about pension issues and other confidential matters with the relevant stakeholders. Among the beneficiaries was Bongiwe Majola (62), who said the event exceeded her expectations.
“I am grateful for the gifts I received,” she said. “It was my first time attending and I had a great time. The food was to die for.”
