Football pundits believe the Nedbank Cup Last 16 draw has been particularly favourable to KwaZulu-Natal clubs, with the province’s teams avoiding powerhouses Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns. The only remaining side from the uMgungundlovu Region and the KZN ABC Motsepe League (SA’s third tier), Mkhambathi FC — affectionately known as Rural Boys — will face Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Milford FC for a place in the quarter-finals. Mkhambathi booked their spot in the last 16 after a spirited 2-1 victory over Motsepe Foundation Championship side Hungry Lions at Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale.
The result was widely regarded as one of the standout upsets of the previous round. Rural Boys general manager Ntuthuko Mlaba admitted that it was daunting challenge, but praised his squad’s character. “I won’t lie, it was a very difficult game,” said Mlaba.
“We are from the ABC Motsepe League and they are in the NFD, so naturally we were the underdogs. On paper it looked almost impossible, but cup competitions are always unpredictable. “Our players showed heart, commitment and teamwork.

They gave everything to make sure we qualified for the next round.” Mlaba said the club remains ambitious despite balancing cup commitments with league responsibilities.“It may sound ambitious, but our aim is to go far in the Nedbank Cup and also challenge for the league title. We believe we have a strong enough squad to compete on both fronts,” he said. Looking ahead to their clash with the Richards Bay-based Milford FC, Mlaba expects another stern test.
“It won’t be easy, but on the field we will do whatever it takes to win. We want to be successful and continue making history for our region.” While the draw avoided early meetings between the country’s biggest names, it has produced several compelling fixtures, including local derbies and heavyweight encounters. KwaZulu-Natal’s Lamontville Golden Arrows will take on Stellenbosch FC, while Durban City are set to face Upington City FC.
