The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has directed all public and private schools to stop inviting learners to attend classes over the holiday period for a fee, deeming the practice unacceptable.

In a statement dated 19th December 2025, Secretary for Education, Science and Technology, Ken Ndala, instructed Education Division Managers, District Commissioners, Directors of Education and Sports, and Chief Education Officers to ensure schools adhere strictly to the directive.

The ministry says the school calendar requires classes to be held only during the prescribed learning period and that holidays are meant for students to spend time with families and recharge after term activities.

The statement states that conducting holiday classes denies learners family time, puts unnecessary financial pressure on parents, and undermines the educational purpose of holidays, which is to let students and teachers perform at their best.

The Secretary requested that the statement’s contents be communicated to all proprietors and headteachers of public and private schools in their divisions and districts.

Education authorities are required to take immediate action against any school violating the instruction.
