MASVINGO — Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Ezra Chadzamira has intervened to stop the closure of Riverton Academy following attempts by Chief Murinye to block the institution’s operations. The intervention allows the private school to continue operating as it finalises its formal regularisation process with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Sources familiar with the matter said Chief Murinye had raised objections to the school’s operations, citing concerns related to traditional authority oversight and compliance issues.

The move had threatened to disrupt learning for pupils already enrolled at the institution. Minister Chadzamira stepped in after engagements with relevant stakeholders, stressing the need to balance respect for traditional leadership with the protection of learners’ right to education and adherence to established government procedures. It is believed the trained lawyer chief wanted his ‘train’ of children to enroll for free but the owner had reservations based on business reasons. The chief has been involved in previous skirmishes woth the community for alleged wrong reasons and was manhandled in 2023 after attempting to disrupt a funeral wake in Gutu.
