The family of Alnika Mitchell, 14, were relieved to hear that murder-accused Milosh Basson will remain in custody this festive season as the case against him was postponed to April 9, 2026 for further investigation. Alnika was gunned down in front of her house in Lugmag Avenue, Factreton on December 6 while watching learners celebrate their matric farewells. She was hit by a stray bullet and ran inside her yard where she collapsed and passed away.
Basson, 35, made his second appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning on six charges including murder, four counts of attempted murder and possession of an illegal firearm. After failing to appoint a private attorney during his first appearance, he stood in the dock without a legal representative. The community of Factreton wore sweaters featuring Alnika’s photograph on it.
They were also armed with posters demanding no bail. Her father, Emilio Johnson said the family is still trying to come to terms with her passing but welcomes the outcome of the court proceedings that her alleged murderer will remain in custody. Our hearts are sore. Every morning when we wake up, just the thought that she is not there, no one will understand. My wife can’t even talk to me some mornings, that is how much he hurt us.
