The Department of Social Development (DSD) has condemned a disturbing viral video circulating in the Eastern Cape, in which adults allow young children to drink alcohol. “We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for encouraging such behaviour are held accountable.” Godlwana further revealed that the department is currently investigating the matter and will take the necessary action. “We call upon those who witnessed this incident or have information regarding where it took place to come forward and report it.

The festive season should be a time of love, rest, and renewal. However, it is also a period when the risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption and substance abuse increase, particularly among children and young people,” she said. The DSD warned that such incidents have devastating consequences for individuals, families, and communities.

Parents and caregivers are urged to stay vigilant and protect their children, especially during the festive season. “Celebrations should uphold strong family values, positive role models, and safe environments that nurture and safeguard young people. The department remains steadfast in enforcing the Children’s Act (38 of 2005), which is designed to uphold the rights and protection of all children,” it stated. Meanwhile, Minister of Social Development Nokuzola Sisisi Tolashe urged the public to avoid excessive alcohol use and to say no to drugs during the festive season and beyond.
