The government has called to punish IDAC head Andrea Johnson and not let her her walk away from her mistakes following her immediate resignation. As the dust refuses to settle after Advocate Andrea Johnson’s resignation from the helm of the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), a rising chorus demands that the government ensure she faces true accountability, rather than slipping away from responsibility with a simple resignation. Civil society organisation Corruption Watch said it is dismayed and disappointed that yet another anti-corruption organisation built by the government has proven to be flawed, adding that the government must ensure that Johnson does not get off with “merely” a resignation.

The organisation said appropriate punitive measures should be applied regardless of her resignation. Johnson on Sunday wrote a formal letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa and the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Advocate Andy Mothibi, requesting to vacate her office immediately and have her three-month notice period waived. In the letter, Johnson stated that she faced severe relentless attacks over the past five months linked to IDAC’s investigations into the SAPS Crime Intelligence officials. Johnson noted that the controversy surrounding her role had brought “extreme negative attention” to IDAC and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), stating that she could not allow herself become a reputational liability to the country’s anti-corruption structure.
