Joseph MadzimureZimpapers Politics HubManicaland Province has submitted recommendations to the Zanu PF party leadership for the conferment of national hero status on Cde Thomas Sukutai Bvuma, who passed away on Monday at the age of 71.Cde Bvuma was a former freedom fighter, a veteran diplomat, former Deputy Editor of The Herald, and an author.Manicaland provincial chairman, Cde Tawanda Mukodza confirmed submitting provincial recommendations to the party leadership.“We have made our submissions to the party leadership seeking Ambassador Bvuma’s national hero status, considering the role he played during and after independence.“We are now waiting for the party leadership’s guidance on our recommendations,” said Cde Mukodza.He said Cde Bvuma was a former Ambassador awarded the Order of the Southern Cross, author of the historical novel “The Chosen Generation” (2021), and other published works.Last year, the Institute of African Knowledge/Museum of African Liberation launched Ambassador Bvuma’s book, “The Chosen Generation”.Cde Bvuma attained his education at St Augustine’s School in Penhalonga and later joined ZANLA forces in 1976 from the then University of Rhodesia, where he was in his second year.He arrived at Doroi Refugee Camp in 1976, before he was transferred to Chimoio Military Base for politico-military training.Thereafter, he was selected for further training at Wampoa Ideological College, now Chitepo School of Ideology.President Mnangagwa head-hunted him to resume university studies at Eduardo Mondlane University in 1977. This was to prepare for post-victory manpower needs in a new independent Zimbabwe.After independence, Cde Bvuma served as President Mugabe’s Chief Press Officer.He later moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, where he was posted as Ambassador to Brazil.Cde Bvuma is one of the few published authors of the Second Chimurenga.The veteran diplomat is survived by his wife Tsitsi, three children, and several grandchildren.
