A man in his 30s drowned at New Beach on Durban’s beachfront on Saturday morning, as emergency services again urged holidaymakers to take extreme caution in the water. ALS Paramedics spokesperson Gareth Jamieson said paramedics were called out just after 10:15am following reports of a drowning incident. When they arrived, Metro Police and lifeguards were already on scene.

“Lifesavers had rescued the man from the water, but despite their efforts, he showed no signs of life and was declared deceased on arrival,” said Jamieson. The circumstances leading to the drowning are still unclear. Police attended the scene and will investigate.Jamieson urged beachgoers to take safety seriously as the festive season begins.

“We ask people to please be cautious and responsible. Swim only in designated areas, listen to lifeguards and never swim under the influence of alcohol or any substance,” he said. The drowning comes as the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) issued a strong warning about hazardous ocean conditions caused by a full-moon spring tide, which peaked on Thursday and is expected to affect the coastline throughout the weekend.
