A man was critically injured after a car crashed into the back of a truck near the Pavilion off-ramp on Tuesday. According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, the incident happened on the freeway shortly after the Pavilion off-ramp. “It appears the car slammed into the back of the truck just after the Pavilion off-ramp,” said Jamieson.

He said the circumstances leading up to the crash are still unclear. Emergency services responded to the scene and the injured driver had to be freed from the wreckage by the fire department. The patient has been cut free from the wreckage by the fire department and has now been stabilised and placed on a ventilator on the scene.

Due to the seriousness of the injuries, a medical helicopter was called in to airlift the injured man to hospital. Jamieson said the freeway had to be temporarily closed to allow the helicopter to land and take off. “He is currently on his way to being loaded into the Netcare 911 medical helicopter where they will take off to a level one trauma facility for the urgent care that the patient requires,” he said. Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
