Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) board of directors has fired the institution’s director general (DG) Daud Suleman, but has kept a tight lid on reasons. Macra board chairperson Chancy Gondwe confirmed the development in an interview yesterday. But Gondwe, a private practice lawyer, did not provide reasons for the decision.

When contacted last evening, Suleman refused to be drawn to comment on the matter. Chief Secretary to the Government Justin Saidi did not provide specific details about the nature of the investigations. He told The Nation then that revealing the details at that stage could have compromised the investigative process.

University of Malawi law lecturer Bernadetta Malunga is on record as having stated that the government’s actions violated the establishing legislation of these institutions, more so due to lack of a board at that particular time. Echoing this view, lawyer and National Advocacy Platform chairperson Benedicto Kondowe argued that in the absence of the boards, the Office of the President and Cabinet should not have made such sweeping decisions. In May 2022, the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament cleared him of any wrongdoing in his alleged irregular recruitment at the parastatal.
