Government has disclosed that it has not yet received a notice of appeal from the family of former President Edgar Lungu, who intend to challenge a court order directing that his body be repatriated to Zambia for burial. In an interview with Diamond News, Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha said the Zambian government has not been served with either the notice of appeal or the grounds of appeal. Mr Kabesha noted, however, that the Lungu family still has until February 11, 2026, to file their submissions in accordance with the court order.

In December last year, the South African Court of Appeal granted the Lungu family permission to appeal against the order requiring that Mr Lungu’s remains be repatriated to Zambia.It has now been 237 days since former President Edgar Lungu died on June 5, 2025, and he has yet to be buried.
