By Showbiz Reporter-The late Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s widow, Elizabeth Macheka, made a rare public appearance on Saturday when she attended former First Lady Grace Mugabe’s 60th birthday celebration in Harare.
The private party, hosted at an exclusive venue in the capital, attracted an eclectic mix of high-profile guests.
Among them were Second Lady Miniyothabo “Minnie” Baloyi, wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga; Zanu PF spokesperson Chris Mutsvangwa and his wife Monica; and Grace Mugabe’s brother and former Zanu PF National Political Commissar, Mike Bimha, accompanied by his wife Tsitsi.
The birthday bash also marked a rare return to the spotlight for Grace Mugabe, whose political rise as the face of Zanu PF’s Generation 40 (G40) faction was abruptly halted by the 2017 military coup that ousted her husband, Robert Mugabe.
Known as “Gucci Grace” for her lavish spending, Grace largely withdrew from public life amid court battles over family assets, accusations of assault in South Africa, and legal efforts to retain immunity.
Saturday’s gathering, which brought together figures from across Zimbabwe’s divided political landscape, has reignited talk of possible comebacks — both for Grace Mugabe and for Elizabeth.
While neither has made any formal statement, their reappearance alongside ruling party insiders and opposition-linked figures hints at a desire to stay politically relevant in a rapidly shifting landscape.
Observers say that even in silence, such symbolic appearances can send strong messages in Zimbabwe’s unpredictable political theatre — suggesting that neither Grace nor Elizabeth is quite ready to be consigned to history just yet.
