The South African Weather Services (Saws) has issued a yellow level four weather warning for KwaZulu-Natal on Monday. The agency cautioned that isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over the province, with some thundershowers expected to become severe. “Thundershowers are expected to become severe over the central and western parts of KZN on Monday, and may be accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, resulting in a low likelihood of significant impacts,” Saws said.

A yellow warning refers to the level of impact to the affected areas, from minor or moderate. According to Saws, a ‘yellow’ warning means to “be aware”. For the eastern and north-eastern parts of the province, Saws said to expect hot and humid temperatures.

“These will result in very uncomfortable conditions for areas in KZN on Monday and Tuesday,” it said. Areas predicted to experience extreme heat are Pietermaritzburg and Riverview with 34 degrees feeling like 37.8 for the former and 35 feeling like 35.8 for the latter. Both are forecasted to have severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
