The abuse of alcohol is rife in South Africa and, as we know, the consequences of this are often appalling. It’s high time that the authorities took decisive action to curb its use. (Taking drunk drivers off the road over the festive season could be seen as a good start.) I would suggest that, in order to be granted a liquor licence, all taverns should be compelled to hire at least three bouncers, whose job it would be to evict anyone who begins to get drunk or become aggressive.
And further, no one carrying a firearm (or any other weapon) should be admitted. Finally, should an assault, like the one that prompted me to write this letter (The Witnesson Monday), ever occur again, the tavern should be closed permanently.
