Using the tools of accountability is never a threat. The MK Party (MKP) seeking to bring another motion of no confidence against the government of provincial unity (GPU) within the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature is both acceptable and predictable. It is, however, not the tool of first instance.
The legislature provides various mechanisms of accountability including motions, member statements, written and oral questions, portfolio committees and physical oversight. Caucuses are also given significant sums of money to work effectively and bring matters to the legislature floor. In this regard, the MKP has been found lacking in both substance and quantity, with their overall contributions mediocre at best.
After more than 18 months, the MKP should instead focus on being a proper opposition party. This is what KZN’s people expect. Yet, they continue to circle like vultures, hoping that KZN’s solid GPU will crumble, so they can feed on its political carcass.

The GPU continues to forge ahead in doing the work of the people, while waiting for a credible and functional opposition — not a family fiefdom marred by internal scandal, a lack of credibility, steeped in inadequacy and interested only in political theatrics. The MKP may repeatedly bring motions of no confidence, and they will be repeatedly defeated. The party needs to start focusing on the real job at hand — serving the people of KZN with the same enthusiasm and commitment shown by the rock-solid GPU.
