I am quite surprised that, three decades into democracy, the matric pass mark (30%), is now the topic of the day. The ineffectiveness, let alone acceptability, of this pass mark was written on the walls (blackboards) back in the 1990s. The decline in South Africa’s prosperity is not solely the blame of the ANC government.

It is mostly due to generations of matriculants benefiting from this “gift”, going through the ranks of life. This I say in all due respect to the “born free” matriculants. It’s heartbreaking that the true potential of so many of them have never, will never, be unlocked.
