The article: “Farmers told to shut down FMD disinfection point” (The Witnesson Wednesday), once again shows how there are various laws in South Africa that are applicable to some and not others. I quote: “According to the law, no one other than police or law enforcement officers, may conduct a roadblock, and authorisation is required. “This is for the safety of both the person stopping the vehicle, and the motorist.” Throughout South Africa, the taxi industry has literally taken this law into its own hands.

Taxi “marshals” are regularly seen pulling over taxis. While these “roadblocks” are for the greater good of all road users, the fact remains, they are illegal, but seemingly okay. Are these marshals fully compliant (conversant) regarding the safety methods and measures of pulling over vehicles?

Perhaps they have a blanket government authorisation? An impromptu FMD disinfection point was also for the greater good of all livestock owners and consumers of red meat, dairy products, etc., but the EFF allegedly chose to report it (although it has denied it). Perhaps a vendetta?

Against farmers? This hypocrisy is enough to choke on. Maybe political parties, those that really, sincerely care for the health and wellbeing of South African citizens, should raise objections against this sickening double standard.
