The initiation of Footballers4ED this January 2026 marks a transformative milestone for Zimbabwe’s sporting icons. For decades, the transition from the stadium to civilian life has been fraught with financial instability, but this new ZANU-PF affiliate is changing the narrative. With a US$100,000 pledge from prominent businessman Cde Kudakwashe Tagwirei, former stars like Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambwa, Brena Msiska, and Evans Gwekwerere are moving beyond past glories into sustainable entrepreneurship.
The programme’s impact is rooted in its project-based approach. This exposure is designed to shift their lifestyles from dependence to self-sufficiency. As ZANU-PF Political Commissar for Youth Affairs, Taurai Kandishaya, noted: “Cde Kudakwashe Tagwirei pledged to support the former footballers with US$100,000 so that they come up with various projects so that they earn a better living.
On top of the $100k, you are allowed to get free health facility and medical at Arundel Hospital.” This initiative underscores ZANU-PF’s serious commitment to empowering all sections of society. This follows a broader pattern of “goodies” and empowerment schemes championed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the nation marches toward Vision 2030. From the Presidential Youth Empowerment Scheme to the Women’s Empowerment Fund, the Second Republic is systematically equipping citizens with the tools to build an upper-middle-income economy.Beyond the finances, the “Soccer Legends” are now tasked with a grassroots revival, scouting young talent and mentoring the next generation.
