Mbulelo Mpofu ,Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub The creative community in Bulawayo is mourning the death of celebrated broadcaster and cultural advocate Babongile Sikhonjwa, who died on Sunday. Among those affected is acclaimed artist Nomashawekazi “Lady Tshawe” Damasane, who credited Sikhonjwa with shaping her career and providing unwavering guidance from the very beginning. In a heartfelt Facebook post, Damasane recalled their first MCing gig at the Ibumba Festival in 2009, where Sikhonjwa, together with arts advocate Sizwakele R Ndlovu, welcomed her as “his little sister”, offering mentorship that would last for over a decade.
“From the days of Isigodlo Samakhosi to the present, you always held my hand,” she wrote. Sikhonjwa’s belief in her potential was steadfast. He encouraged her to pursue opportunities in radio, insisting she “shouldn’t waste her voice”.
He also playfully nicknamed her “Tea Girl”. Beyond encouragement, Sikhonjwa taught Damasane the importance of persistence in the face of challenges.“Keep pushing Ndebele Crush, even with the ups and downs, it will make sense. Keep thriving in the arts because that’s where you belong,” he advised.

Damasane noted that Sikhonjwa’s guidance extended far beyond her own career.“There’s a lot (to say), but one thing is certain: you did this for countless people.
