The KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC has kick-started processes for the removal of National Freedom Party (NFP) MPL Mbali Shinga after the party had notified the provincial parliament about her expulsion from the organisation. In a letter to Shinga – who is also the government of provincial unity (GPU) Social Development MEC, KZN Legislature Speaker Nontembeko Boyce informed her that the legislature will have to remove her unless s a “competent body” ruled against her expulsion from the NFP. In view of the above {letter written to the Legislature by the NFP} you are advised that the Legislature must accept that you are expelled from your party.
“Unless interdicted by a competent body, the Speaker is compelled to implement the request of the party and will do so as soon as is reasonably possible,” she said. The development sets the stage for a potentially significant court challenge that could determine whether Shinga retains her seat in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature and her position in the provincial Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
