The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council (KZNCC) has emphasised that the liberty and dignity of women in places of worship must be protected, saying faith communities have a responsibility to ensure women are able to participate freely and safely in religious life. During Human Rights month, the council also highlighted its work to uplift and protect women in the faith fraternity. On Monday, Justice and Constitutional Development Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi led the national launch of the 30th anniversary of the Constitution, which also marks the commencement of Human Rights Month.

The programme will place primary emphasis on the year-long commemoration of three decades of constitutional democracy under the theme: “30 Years of Constitutional Democracy: One Constitution, One Nation — Reflect, Renew, Recommit”. The council’s Bishop Nathi Zondi said churches should be spaces where women are respected, empowered and given equal opportunity to worship and serve without discrimination. Zondi said the freedom of women within religious spaces is a matter of justice and human dignity.

Places of worship must be environments where women feel safe and valued. “The liberty of women to participate fully in worship is imperative,” he added. Zondi said that religious institutions must play a role in confronting harmful practices and attitudes that limit the participation of women in church life. The council said women should be able to take part in worship, leadership and ministry without facing barriers based on gender.
