LONDON— King Charles III has stripped his brother Prince Andrew of all royal titles, styles, and honours, effectively ending his public life as a royal following allegations of sexual misconduct linked to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In a terse and uncompromising statement, Buckingham Palace confirmed that the former Duke of York will now be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, marking a decisive break between the monarchy and one of its most scandal-plagued figures. “His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the style, titles and honours of Prince Andrew.
Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation,” the statement read.
The move, unprecedented in modern royal history, comes after years of mounting outrage over Andrew’s association with Epstein and allegations made by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed the prince sexually abused her before she tyurned 18 years old. She mysteriously died in a suicide at the age of 41. Andrew has repeatedly denied the allegations but paid a reported £12 million settlement in 2022 to end Giuffre’s civil lawsuit without admitting liability.

“There are no modern precedents for such a colossal loss of royal status,” reported The Guardian, noting that this was the first time a royal of Andrew’s standing had been publicly and formally stripped of all privileges by the reigning monarch. The BBC, in its analysis, described the move as “a ripping off the bandage moment,” signalling the Palace’s determination to end “the endless oil slick of bad news stories about Andrew.” The Epstein saga, however, continues to widen. It is alleged that Epstein’s circle of influence included high-ranking officials, business magnates, actors, and politicians, among them the current United States President Donald Trump.
President Trump has denied all allegations linking him to Epstein’s crimes, but hisfailure to release Epstein’s full list,as he had pledged during his presidential campaign, has only added “gasoline to the rumour mill,” according topolitical observers in Washington. The list does not include anyone from Malawi. Hours after the announcement, the Palace confirmed that Andrew’s name had been removed from the official royal roll, a symbolic but devastating act that effectively ends his royal existence.
His titles which include Duke of York, Earl of Inverness, and Baron Killyleagh have all been rescinded, and his HRH (His Royal Highness) style permanently withdrawn. Andrew is also expected to vacate his 30-room Royal Lodge in Windsor, relocating to private accommodation on the Sandringham estate. The King will reportedly provide limited private financial support, ensuring what insiders described as his brother’s “quiet removal from public view.” Public reaction was swift and unforgiving.
Piers Morgan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This is one of the most extraordinary statements ever released by the Palace. The King has basically turned his brother into a non-Royal.” For a man once celebrated as the Queen’s “favourite son,” the fall is total. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor now stands as a royal outcast stripped of honour, title, and dignity.
