Mozambican Consular General Stambul Marcelino Dos Santos Anica has commended Kalibu Academy students and management for donating relief items to people affected by recent floods in his country. Speaking on Tuesday after receiving the items in Blantyre, he said the gesture means a lot to the people of Mozambique. Anica described the gesture as a sign of strong neighbourly relations.
“It means a lot for us to receive such a donation from our neighbours during this difficult time,” he said. Kalibu Academy students and management organised clothes, soap, body lotions and assorted food items as part of their efforts to help communities affected by floods. Karibu Academy headmaster Paisley Mavutula said the donation followed an appeal for assistance from Mozambican partners, which prompted the school to mobilise students to help.
Kalibu Academy head girl Alice Languane, who is from Nampula in Mozambique, said she felt honoured to be part of the initiative. She said the gesture shows people are mindful of what is happening in neighbouring countries and encouraged students from other schools to also take part in similar humanitarian efforts. Languane said disasters can happen to anyone and supporting each other is important, adding that today one country may receive help while tomorrow it may be their turn to assist others. Mozambique has recently experienced floods that have displaced many families and damaged property in several parts of the country.
