Langton NyakwendaJOHN NYIKADZINO could be one of the most unsung heroes of division one football in Zimbabwe. He has worked in both the central and eastern regions. He is now in the southern region where he is attempting to guide Bulawayo Chiefs back into the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.Nyikadzino is bidding to create another piece of history, having also led Chapungu, Nichrut and Sheasham to the Promised Land in his previous gigs. The veteran gaffer spoke about his fresh task soon after Bulawayo Chiefs edged Zebra Revolution 1-0 at Chiefs Village on Saturday. The Ninjas profited from Nkayi United’s goalless draw against Blackrock to close the gap between them and the log leaders to just one point.Bulawayo Chiefs are second with 40 points, one behind log leaders Nkayi United while Hwange are third and five points behind The Ninjas.Former PSL side Bulawayo City are seventh with 26 points.“Bulawayo Chiefs are a big football brand and the objective remains the same, that is to gain promotion.“I am confident we are going to make it with the quality of players that we have,” a confident Nyikadzino said.“It’s a matter of trying to work on the finishing. Once we correct that, then we are going to get it right.“The Southern Region Division One League has stiff competition, considering how the log table looks.“But with time we will separate boys from men.”Nyikadzino was unveiled at Bulawayo Chiefs on June 11, replacing Maxwell Takaendesa Jongwe, and has overseen some steady progress at the former PSL side.Chiefs were relegated from the top flight at the end of last season, but the club’s funders have declared that they want an immediate return. And The Ninjas are on track if last weekend’s results are anything to go by.While Nkayi United dropped points, Hwange thumped Mainline 4-0 but the coalminers remain five points behind Bulawayo Chiefs, whose victory against Zebra Revolution pushed them to 40 points. The Ninjas missed a glut of chances against Zebra Revolution. They could have scored at least four goals in the first half. However, the difference in class between the two sides was clear, as Bulawayo Chiefs fielded seasoned players including Kelvin Madzongwe, Arthur “Diego” Musiyiwa, Malvin Mkolo, and goalie Matripples Muleya.New signing Godfrey Makaruse also started while former Warriors striker Farau Matare came on as a second half substitute.“My task is to develop the team game by game, so I am not happy with the way we are missing chances.“We have to work hard and try to improve on the conversion rate,” said Nyikadzino.“Yes, I have been a master when it comes to promoting teams but that has happened in the Central Region, now I am in the Southern Region.“The attitude from the boys is correct, they are showing some good character.”Share on FacebookPost on XFollow usSave Originally published on Zimbabwe Herald All Zim News is a central hub for all things Zimbabwean, curating news from across the country so no story is missed.
