The salary crisis at the cash-strapped KwaZulu-Natal’s Impendle Municipality has finally been resolved, with all outstanding December salaries having been paid on Monday. Impendle Municipality spokesperson Thami Mkhulisi on Tuesday confirmed that the matter had been resolved, and that all employees had received their December salaries. As a municipality, we would like to extend our sincere apologies to our employees for the inconvenience caused by the delay in paying the December salaries.
“As promised, I can confirm that all our employees have now received their salaries,” Mkhulisi said. The salary impasse had drawn sharp criticism from Buthelezi, who described the non-payment of municipal workers as unacceptable, particularly during the festive season. “It is deeply regrettable that municipal employees and their families were facing such hardship during the festive season.
The Impendle Municipality’s failure to pay its employees the December salaries, Buthelezi said, was not an isolated incident. In May, Impendle Municipality also failed to pay salaries on time, a situation that was only resolved after the provincial government’s intervention. According to Buthelezi, the recurrence of salary delays raised serious concerns about the municipality’s financial controls, governance capacity and overall sustainability.
