Msunduzi residents responded to the call to share their views on the proposed 2026/27 municipal tariff increases on Tuesday evening. The City’s main council chamber was filled with residents from across Msunduzi who attended the public consultation meeting. In his opening address, Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla urged residents not to remain silent during the consultation process and reminded attendees that the tariff increases are still at the proposal stage and will only be finalised after all required processes are completed.
These include consultations with the business sector, government, Nersa, and input from uThukela-Umgeni Water, after which council will approve the final percentage increases. The City is proposing a 9,26% electricity tariff increase, subject to consideration by energy regulator Nersa, as well as 13% increases for water and sanitation. Tariffs for refuse removal, landfill sites, cemeteries, swimming pools, community halls, libraries, and fire and emergency services are set to increase by 3,7%.
The municipality has also proposed relief measures, including a 40% property rebate for state and private pensioners, disability grant recipients, and child-headed households earning R6 108 or less per month. Other proposed increases include a 5,5% rise in housing tariffs and a 10,5% increase in municipal market rentals. While residents welcomed the opportunity to express their views, illegal electricity connections was a major point of concern raised by residents on Tuesday. Resident Siyabonga Ngcobo asked if those who are paying for their electricity were affected by those who were stealing.
