IFP Jozini-based firebrand Mdabe Mathenjwa is in hot water after publicly questioning the party leadership’s decision to hand over the KwaZulu-Natal Umkhanyakude District Municipality mayoral position to the ANC. In September, the IFP, working with other parties, toppled ANC Umkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka through a motion of no confidence. Mdaka’s removal saw the ANC threatening to withdraw from the IFP-led government of provincial unity (GPU).
As part of the restoration of relations within the GPU, the IFP then agreed to support Mdaka’s re-election as Umkhanyakude District mayor. However, the IFP leadership’s decision to reinstate Mdaka did not sit well with some party members in the district. You are taking advantage of the IFP’s values, such as showing respect to leadership.
Just because uMntwana [IFP founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi] taught us respect, you think you can do all sorts of wrong things and we will keep quiet. “You think we will keep quiet when you undermine the IFP,” he said. The IFP leadership then responded by summoning Mathenjwa to the party’s headquarters.

“You are invited to appear before the national executive committee (NEC) to respond regarding the voice note and screenshots by yourself insulting the senior leadership of the party,” IFP general secretary Mfanje Mbango said in a letter addressed to Mathenjwa. Mathenjwa is expected to appear before the NEC during a meeting scheduled to be held at the party’s Durban headquarters on Monday.
