The MK Party/ EFF KwaZulu-Natal Legislature coalition which had pinned it’s hopes of toppling Premier Thami Ntuli on support from NFP’s sole Mbali Shinga, on Monday was met with a setback when she made it clear that she will not join the coalition against Ntuli. Speaking during the debate on the MK Party’s motion of no confidence in Ntuli in the KZN Legislature on Monday, Shinga labelled the motion as designed to “grab media headlines”. “A motion of no confidence should flow from a proper assessment of the performance of a government.

This motion doesn’t pass that test,” she said. According to the MK Party, Ntuli amongst other things failed to create jobs for the unemployed people of KZN. With 37 seats out of the provincial house’s 80 seats in the KZN Legislature, the MK Party needs the support of MPLs from rival parties for its motion to succeed The government of provincial unity (GPU) composed of the IFP, ANC, DA and NFP, has a collective 41 seats.

The EFF, which has declared its support for the MKP motion, has two seats in the KZN Legislature. While NFP president Ivan Barnes raised the hopes of the MK Party/EFF coalition when he stated that his party will support the MK Party’s motion, Shinga, who is also the Social Development MEC, said as a GPU partner, the NFP has an obligation to support the coalition government. As the NFP we are proud of the fact that we have been able to turn around the Social Development Department. “We were able to achieve that through the support of my colleagues in the GPU cabinet,” she said.
