The agenda includes discussions on the ILO Governing Body and Director-General’s reports, as well as the proposed program and budget for 2026-2027.
This international spotlight on Zimbabwe’s leadership in global labour affairs, however, comes as the country faces significant domestic challenges regarding labour rights.
Back home in Harare, lecturers at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) commenced an indefinite strike on March 24, 2025, demanding the restoration of their pre-2018 salary scales.
The Association of University Teachers (AUT) states that junior lecturers’ monthly salaries were drastically cut from US$2,250 to less than US$300 in October 2018, a reduction of approximately 87%.
This dramatic decrease has left academics struggling to afford basic necessities and their children’s education.
