The chairs were brought to the office on Monday morning to assist members of the public waiting in long queues before the building opened. The intervention came amid ongoing complaints from residents, including elderly people, mothers with young children and those who are unwell, about standing for hours without seating, shelter or access to basic amenities. Home Affairs’ KZN provincial manager Cyril Mncwabe said the chairs remain the property of the MK Party and are not part of the department’s infrastructure.

They didn’t give chairs to the department but placed them outside for people to sit. He added that none of the chairs had been moved into the building. “We know that this is part of campaigning.

There are no chairs of theirs that enter our building; therefore, there is no donation to Home Affairs. “The MK Party brought chairs to assist people waiting outside to enter our offices,” he said. Mncwabe further explained that the party makes its own arrangements to remove or store the chairs after office hours. The clarification follows public interest around whether the chairs formed part of a formal donation to the department or were a temporary intervention to assist people standing in queues.
