Highlanders Football Club has issued a statement acknowledging an offer by benefactor Sir Wicknell Chivayo to cover the full salary of former Zimbabwe international Benjani Mwaruwari if he is appointed as the club’s next head coach.In a press release dated 01 December 2025, the Bulawayo giants said they appreciated Chivayo’s gesture, which proposed to “facilitate and take care of Mr. Benjani Mwaruwari” should the club engage him as head coach.The club said it recognised the benefactor’s intentions and noted that he acted with “the best interests of the club at heart.” However, Highlanders also reminded its stakeholders that it follows established procedures when hiring technical staff.“There are processes and procedures that are in place that speak to the hiring of Technical and playing staff,” the statement read, emphasising that such decisions cannot be influenced by external proposals alone.Highlanders confirmed that they are already in the final stages of selecting a new head coach to replace Mr. De Jongh for the upcoming season.

Although the name of the preferred candidate was not disclosed, the club said it would make the announcement once the process is complete.“This development will be shared with the Highlanders FC family once concluded,” the club stated, indicating that internal assessments are still underway.The club also thanked Chivayo for his continued support and for considering ways to assist Highlanders as they prepare for a milestone year.“We thank Sir Chivayo for his consideration and continued support to the club,” the statement said.
