Residents of Hayfields have signed a petition calling for traffic calming measures to be implemented along high accident zone roads, following the latest fatal accident that claimed the life of a young father last weekend. The petition was signed during a community meeting convened by Ward Councillor Edith Elliot on Tuesday. Elliot said traffic lights are urgently needed in accident-prone areas.
“Some of the most common accident spots are along Foxon and Rushmore roads. Traffic lights would be more effective than speed humps, particularly as vehicles often come speeding down these roads. “Several incidents prompted this meeting.
Residents are also concerned about roads along Hesketh and Murray. With the ongoing developments, revenue generated can help improve the area and support road upgrades,” said Elliot. The meeting also addressed plans for new housing estates, electricity, water supply, sewage, and waste collection.

Developers of key estates presented project plans and assured residents that all town planning requirements had been met, including measures to manage traffic. Jesmondene Lifestyle Estate director Kevin Beekrum, along with property developer Andrew Barnes, said traffic-impact assessments had been conducted to mitigate additional traffic as part of municipal approval. There are three property developers working together on this community development.
We have used traffic-calming assessments to evaluate traffic and determine where road widening and other measures are needed. “As part of the municipal approval, a service-level agreement requires us to implement road traffic calming measures,” said Beekrum. Jesmondene Lifestyle Estate, launched last month, will feature 335 eco-friendly units with one, two or three-bedroom apartments.
