Govt’s CDF initiative transforms water access in Mwenezi East

Story by Gay MatamboTHE Constituency Development Fund allocated to Mwenezi East constituency has contributed to significant improvement in potable water provision, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for rural communities in the area.Parts of Mwenezi District have of late been battling with the shortage of clean and potable water after the drying up of traditional water sources and some boreholes. However, recurrent water woes are set to ease in Mwenezi East constituency after more boreholes were sunk recently in areas that include Sosonye, Mpapa, and Masangula through the use of the Constituency Development Fund.Beneficiaries of the initiative welcomed the development, which is set to ease water challenges in the area while improving livelihoods.“We are happy here at Mpapa. We have been living in this area for 25 years and we had no access to clean water. We want to thank our leadership for prioritising water provision through the use of the CDF funds,” a community member said.“We thank our ZANU PF-led leadership for this development. We used to travel seven to eight kilometres to get water. Our livestock also did not have water to drink, and we used to experience a high number of livestock deaths, but that is now a thing of the past,” another added. The initiative, which complements government’s borehole sinking programme, is set to be implemented in all areas across the constituency.“We are happy with this programme that has come from our President through our MP, Honourable Sheilla Chikomo. Here in Ward 2, we had serious water challenges as Mwenezi is found in the dry parts of the country that is in Region 5. The communities and the livestock had challenges in accessing water, but this programme is set to improve the situation. We are grateful as more boreholes are set to be sunk in the shortest possible time,” Mwenezi East constituency, Ward 2 Councillor Nithiel Makotose said.Government has sunk close to 4 000 boreholes countrywide under the Presidential Rural Development Programme, a landmark initiative designed to ensure access to clean water and spearhead rural industrialisation.Under the programme, plans are already in motion to establish 35 000 Village Business Units across the country.
