The Government says rehabilitation of key access roads linking Bulawayo, Maphisa and Gwanda is expected to be completed by August 2026. The update was presented in Cabinet by Transport Minister Daniel Garwe on behalf of Vice President Kembo Mohadi, who chairs the Cabinet Committee on State Occasions and National Monuments. According to the report on preparations for the 46th Independence Anniversary celebrations, the Children’s Party and legacy infrastructure projects in Matabeleland South Province are said to be at an advanced stage, with most works expected to be completed before the main event on Saturday.
“Preparations for the 2026 Independence Day Celebrations, the Children’s Party, and legacy infrastructure projects are well advanced, with most expected to be completed prior to the Celebrations,” the report said. Government said construction works at the main arena, stadium and access roads are on schedule to be completed by 15 April 2026. However, major roadworks on the Bulawayo–Maphisa and Gwanda–Maphisa routes will continue beyond the celebrations, with authorities targeting August 2026 for full completion.
“The construction of major access roads including Bulawayo-Maphisa and Gwanda-Maphisa is ongoing and targeted for completion by August 2026. In the interim, measures will be taken to ensure these roads are trafficable and detours are closed in time for the event,” the report added. Officials said temporary measures, including grading, gravelling and drainage works, will be implemented to ensure the roads remain usable during the Independence Day programme.

Repairs are also underway on several feeder routes, including Maphisa-Mphoengs, Sun Yat Sen-Manama, and St Joseph-Sun Yat Sen roads, as part of broader efforts to improve access to the main celebration venue. The annual Children’s Party is scheduled for 17 April 2026 at Mahetshe Primary School, with about 3 050 children expected to attend. President Emmerson Mnangagwa is expected to host the event. Meanwhile, the Independence Torch relay began on 10 April 2026 at Zezane Assembly Point in Matabeleland South Province, officiated by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
