THE Second Republic is scaling up critical economic enablers with regard to energy, water, transport and infrastructure as well as creating a conducive regulatory environment for further macro-economic growth, President Mnangagwa has said.
Addressing the 385th Ordinary Session of the Politburo at the Zanu PF Headquarters in Harare yesterday, the revolutionary party’s First Secretary said both the ruling party and central Government were determined to deliver a higher quality of life, extending from social services to empowerment programmes and infrastructure, right up to improved household income.
“The people must remain the central motivation and core business of the party. Serving our party, Government and our great motherland, Zimbabwe, wholeheartedly, remains our main quest.
“In light of this, decisions, programmes and projects should be people-centred, and in the interests of our beloved motherland,” he said.
President Mnangagwa reiterated that policies, programmes and projects being rolled out must continue to benefit the generality of Zimbabweans.
“At the Government level, we are scaling up critical economic enablers with regards to energy, water, transport infrastructure, as well as a conducive regulatory environment, for further macro-economic growth.
“The various empowerment programmes that we continue to roll out should be diligently implemented to ensure that all projects realise their intended objectives,” said the President.
Zimbabweans, he said, must be made aware and organised enough to take up the numerous opportunities in the agriculture, mining, manufacturing and tourism sectors, among others.
Focus on the agriculture sector, said the President, should shift towards agro-industries and value addition, with market-driven production inclined towards exports.
“Additionally, in the agriculture sector, it is encouraging that preparations for the 2025/2026 summer cropping season are already in progress.
“The party must take the lead in organising communities, village by village and district by district, towards consolidating the significant improvements we have realised in crop output and the broader agriculture sector.
“Our party membership must be made aware and organised to take up the numerous opportunities in the manufacturing, mining, agriculture and tourism sectors, among others.
“A broader base of our membership must be the target in our empowerment programmes and not restricted to a few people in the leadership levels of our structures,” he said.
In terms of the mining sector, President Mnangagwa said the country continued to register successes, as he singled out the recently commissioned 35MW solar plant at Zimplats.
“In the mining sector, in particular, I was delighted to commission the Zimplats’ expansion projects.
“The expanded smelter stands as a major leap in our quest for local value addition and beneficiation, as well as increased industrial capacity.
“The 35-Mega Watt plant built by the company is an example worth emulating, towards energy self-sufficiency at the industry level,” he said.
As the Second Republic continues rolling out life-transforming initiatives, President Mnangagwa said there was no room for opportunism and self-centred cadreship.
As such, he directed that he receives statistical reports on the number of people who have benefited from various programmes.
“Our policies, programmes and projects must benefit the majority. As departments, I will be expecting disaggregated reports of how many people we have uplifted, ward-by-ward, with regards to your respective sectors and departments.
“The time has come for the party to be scientific, qualitative and quantitative in the analysis of its policies and programmes,” said President Mnangagwa.
On the ruling party’s youth, women and war veterans programmes, he said they must continue to revolve to benefit more members.
“I expect detailed reports on the impact and extent that these projects have realised transformation in our communities, province by province,” said the President.
He addressed the rise in reckless driving on the country’s roads, which has resulted in the needless loss of many lives.
Such incidents, said the President, “cannot be allowed to continue”.
This comes following the tragic accident that claimed 17 lives in Chitungwiza last week.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police, along with other stakeholders such as the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development, have been directed to enforce road traffic regulations with greater stringency.
“However, the responsibility of safety on our roads lies with each and every road user.
Discipline, patience and soberness are essential for order across all sectors of our society.
“Ngazvitangire kumhuri kuti idzidzise vana vachikura kuti vaite hunhu hwakanaka, nekuva nehanya nevamwe vanhu. Rogue and thuggery behaviour, including on our roads, is not acceptable in our nation. The law will take its course on those found wanting,” he said.
