Government, through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, remains committed to ensure that the country’s road infrastructure is maintained in a serviceable condition to support mobility, safety and economic activity within the Mabutsane district. Responding to a question in Parliament recently, Assistant Minister, Mr Keoagile Atamelang said to that end, the ministry was planning to undertake routine maintenance of the Kokong-A2 Junction, Kanaku-Mabutsane, Mahotshwane-Sekoma, Mosepele-Lefoko, Jwaneng-Maokane, Mokhomma-Maokane-Jwaneng, Mokhomma-Thankane, Khakhea-Kutuku-Mabutsane, Kokong-Khakhea, Khakhea-Itholoke and Keng-Mabutsane roads. Mr Atamelang explained that the roads would be maintained through dry grading, which would be carried out on a quarterly basis.
He said the intervention was intended to preserve road surfaces, improve riding quality and prevent further deterioration. He added that in addition to dry grading and subject to the availability of funds, the ministry would implement spot improvements on critical sections of the road network that had been identified as requiring urgent attention. The roads, he said included the Kokong-A2 Junction, Sekoma-Mahotshwane-A2 Junction, Jwaneng-Maokane, Mokhomma-Maokane-Jwaneng road and Mokhomma-Thankane road.
He further said the planned spot improvements would focus on addressing localised defects such as potholes, erosion, poor drainage and other structural weaknesses that compromised road safety and accessibility. “By prioritising these interventions, the ministry aims to enhance connectivity between communities, facilitate the movement of goods and services and support socio-economic development in these areas,” he said. He also told Parliament that the ministry would continue to monitor the condition of such roads and adjust its maintenance strategies as necessary, within the constraints of the available budget, to ensure optimal service delivery to the public. Jwaneng/Mabutsane MP, Mr Omphemetse Kwapa had asked the minister to indicate government’s plans to maintain the roads since they were the only access roads linking villages in Mabutsane District and they were not tarred.ENDS
