Government bans night vending and second-hand clothing sales

Nyore MadzianikeSenior ReporterThe Government has banned the sale of second-hand clothing in the Central Business Districts of local authorities and has also prohibited all night vending effective immediately.Local authorities have been directed to implement the ban in a humane manner. Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe made the announcement today during an interactive meeting with City of Harare councillors at Town House.“I want to take this opportunity to advise that the Government has banned the importation and sale of second-hand clothing. Consequently, street and night vending activities are also banned,” he stated.“The City of Harare is therefore directed to collaborate with law enforcement authorities to ensure that there is no further street or night vending.

The time to act is now, not later,” he emphasised.During the meeting, Minister Garwe mentioned that the proliferation of street and night vending has undermined formal businesses, which have remained loyal to local authorities by paying rates, bills, and taxes.
