Gift of the Givers to distribute 120 000 meals in Ramadan relief programme

Volunteers pack essential food hampers ahead of Ramadan distribution in the Western Cape. Gift of the Givershas rolled out an extensive Ramadan relief programme across the Western Cape as Muslims prepare for a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and charity. On the eve of Ramadan, the humanitarian organisation will distribute tons of food supplies to 25 mosques, madrasas and community organisations in socioeconomically challenged areas.

These centres will use the supplies to prepare daily iftar meals for those breaking their fast, ensuring vulnerable families and individuals can observe the holy month with dignity. The iftar meals will also be open to the broader community — whether fasting or not — in keeping with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Over the years, the centres have expanded significantly and now play a key role in supporting fasting families within their communities.

Bulk food supplies will also be provided to the Muslim Prison Board to assist with the preparation of iftar meals for Muslim inmates. In total, 100 000 meals will be distributed through the 25 centres during Ramadan. In addition, Gift of the Givers will host mass community iftars every weekend throughout the month in various disadvantaged areas across the Western Cape.

A further 20,000 meals will be served at these gatherings, allowing communities to come together in the spirit of unity that defines the holy month. Ramadan hampers will also be distributed to families in need across the province, extending to areas including George and Saldanha Bay. The ceremonial handover of food supplies to the 25 centres will took place on Wednesday, at the Gift of the Givers warehouse in Airport Industria.

“Embracing true Cape Town culture, Gift of the Givers will also host mass community iftars every weekend throughout Ramadan in various socioeconomically disadvantaged areas across the Western Cape, allowing communities to come together and experience the atmosphere and unity of the holy month. An additional 20 000 meals will be served at these gatherings,” said Gift of the Givers. Abdul Khaliq Allie, president of the United Ulamā Council of South Africa, is expected to deliver a message of appreciation to the institutions undertaking the programme.
