That is why the reckless call by Minister Daniel Garwe to cancel the 2028 elections is more than a misstep — it is an insult to the liberation struggle and a betrayal of those who died for our freedom.
The Blood That Paid for the Ballot
Our parents, our brothers, our sisters — many never returned from the bush war.
They gave up safety, comfort, and in many cases, life itself, so Zimbabweans could inherit one sacred principle: one man, one vote.
To cancel elections today is to trample on their sacrifice.
It is to raise a flag at Heroes Acre and declare that their blood was shed in vain.
Garwe’s Call: Unpatriotic and Illegal
Minister Garwe has floated the idea of postponing elections and extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term to 2030.
This is not patriotism.
It is recklessness dressed up as loyalty.
Let us be clear: Mnangagwa does not need this.
If he stands in 2028, he wins.
What he does not need is to be painted as a power-hungry dictator because of one misguided minister.
Even worse, the proposal is flat-out illegal.
Section 158(1)(a) of the Constitution leaves no room for interpretation: a general election must be held within 30 days before the expiry of the President’s five-year term.
Canceling elections is not just unconstitutional; it is treasonous against democracy.
Ironically, Garwe’s plan has been cheered on by unelectable elements in the opposition.
