HARARE – Former Norton MP Temba Mliswa has called for an investigation into Presidential spokesperson George Charamba, accusing him of betraying President Emmerson Mnangagwa and displaying disloyalty in his role as a government communicator. “Why are some of you acting surprised by allegations that George Charamba should be investigated for letting down the President? The guy has a history for betraying his principals,” Mliswa wrote.
He referenced former First Lady Grace Mugabe’s past criticism of Charamba during the late stages of former President Robert Mugabe’s rule, suggesting that previous disputes hinted at a pattern of self-preserving behaviour. Charamba served as Mugabe’s spokesperson while secretly conspiring with Mnangagwa, who later removed Mugabe through a military coup in November 2017. Mliswa has seemingly accused Charamba of working with Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who is in a bitter succession feud with Mnangagwa.
A recent Mutare Zanu-PF conference resolved to implement the controversial resolution number one which is aimed at extending Mnangagwa’s term of office with two more years, from 2028 to 2030. Chiwenga who has been the frontrunner in the race to replace Mnangagwa, is opposed to the 2030 agenda.
