Khaled Salah, Vice President – Africa at AVEVA, shares insights into how organisations can move beyond pilot projects and embed scalable, impactful digital solutions into their operations. As South Africa grapples with persistent energy constraints, ageing infrastructure, and the urgent need to remain globally competitive, digital transformation is shifting from aspiration to necessity. At the forefront of this shift is AVEVA, a global leader in industrial software, which is working with businesses across Africa to unlock efficiencies through AI, digital twins, and data-driven operations.
Speaking during a recent industry engagement, Khaled Salah, Vice President – Africa at AVEVA, shared insights into how organisations can move beyond pilot projects and embed scalable, impactful digital solutions into their operations. Considering South Africa’s energy constraints and grid instability, how can digital technologies such as AI and digital twins move beyond pilot projects to deliver meaningful change within energy-intensive industries? As humanity, we face a significant challenge: the demand for energy is growing rapidly.
Over the next 20 years, we will need to provide energy to an additional five billion people. Currently, one billion people still have no access to energy at all, with 60% of them in Africa. Around 600 million people on the continent lack access, while a further two billion have insufficient access.

Access to energy is a fundamental human right. Without it, it is impossible to sustain a decent quality of life or fully support technological advancement, including AI and innovation.
